Saturday, June 18, 2022 was a good day for me. I like new adventures and I attended the Red Bull Soapbox Race today. This was their first appearance in Des Moines. Our son Trent took me to this special event held at one of my favorite places in the world--the Iowa State Capitol Grounds area. When you think of soapboxes you probably think of kids. The Red Bull is a big people's race so get "ON YOUR SOAPBOX" and come with me!

The excitement for the day starts with the gathering on the hill (Walnut Street) just south of the Iowa State Capitol. The owners and crew gather around their vehicles. They remind me of Lee Greenwood type people who have enthusiasm for life--enthusiasm for their sport and love for America.

What a way to start the day! Michael Fries starts the day singing The NATIONAL ANTHEM. He was formerly of Long Island, N.Y and now resides right here in Des Moines. Looking down the hill you could see 25,000 people on their feet, with their hands on their hearts, all proud to be Americans. Right: The fun starts!

A soapbox is a gravity propelled motorless vehicle designed to go downhill. You know it as a kids thing, but Red Bull Energy Drinks are into extreme sports. That's where the fun begins--grown adults--acting like kids--racing downhill in vehicles that took many hours to build. Of course, there were mishaps along the way (left; this one happened when these guys crashed into the hay bale barrier just a few feet from me.) Right: As far as I know, every team finished the race passing through the finish line. So the next time the strains of life unravel you, "GET ON YOUR SOAPBOX" and take a ride.
