This month has been pretty much a stay at home time for me. I looked HIGH AND WIDE for a close by story for my VFB. Then I discovered two new happenings right here in our adjacent suburb. So here goes as we "cross the border" to West Des Moines.

Ordinarily I would look at utility poles along the highway and consider them a ho-hum necessity. But look at these MidAmerican giant HIGH in the sky steel structures recently installed in West Des Moines. They safely and efficiently transport electric energy across Interstate I-35. The first threesome (left) is located behind Jordan Creek WDM HyVee and the other adjacent to the Target parking lot. Now you might ask, "just power poles--so what's the big deal?" Well, I show you a lot of sculptures around town and I think MidAmerican Energy may have created a work of art--with a worthwhile purpose.

DECEMBER--2024

.November 21, 2024 marks the grand opening of the new Athene Pedestrian Bridge connecting Raccoon River Park and Walnut Woods State Park in West Des Moines. The WIDE riverbed and adjacent river bank (above middle) called for a 620 foot bridge. The beautiful name sign (left) and special art sculptures above the lookout area (right) add to the beauty of this amazing structure.This beautiful new bridge opens up a whole new realm of recreational opportunities. So bring your bike or go for a hike! You might even want to put your lunch in your backpack--there are a lot of nice benches along the trail.
