VIEWS OF A FARM BOY

     RETURN TO HOMEPAGE>>>>>>>>

The Greenbelt goats are a special breed--that doesn't mean they are a special variety. That is my way of saying they have a special place in the hearts of Clive Greenbelt Park visitors. These beautiful animals have spent the winter in their own little community behind Clive City Hall. They have enjoyed luxury living complete with goat houses, lots of hay, commercial food and fresh water. Now it is spring! The new babies have been born and the weather is getting warm. That also means the honeysuckle (and other invasive weeds/brush) are coming to life by the nearby recreation trail. That just happens to be these guys favorite food. Soon they will be assigned specific areas where they will eat the junk-food stuff and turn the area back to usable parkland. Now, how is that for an environmentally friendly approach to weed control? This lovable goat herd provides a unique solution to eliminate undesirable plantlife in highly populated areas where prolonged chemical use would not be appropriate. Who ever thought I would be telling you to "thank a goat?"  But, next time you walk or ride your bike down Greenbelt Trail, give these guys a high five. Remember, I call them GO-TO GOATS because they are going to work for you and me.

GO-TO GOATS

Spring in Iowa. There are goats behind Clive (Iowa) City Hall. This isn't a petting zoo--these are working goats. I call them GO-TO GOATS. Soon they will leave this temporary housing area and GO-TO Greenbelt Park and GO TO work! Below: Meet my new friends--each has a "goat-quote."

"We are all in this together. I'm sure glad they didn't separate the sheep from the goats. We don't always agree, but we still love and respect each other"

"This nice lady bought my lunch! It is very good, but I am looking forward to be turned loose in Greenbelt Park so I can eat some nice fresh weeds."
