DSM --CONTINUED

HAPPY 50th ANNIVERSARY! The Community Foundation of Greater Des Moines was established in 1969. This is one of my favorite organizations that has provided donors the opportunity to carry out their charitable giving goals in so many unique ways. In recognition of this special 50th anniversary, the foundation commissioned mural artist Ben Schuh to paint this work of art--a tribute to the Greater Des Moines area. You must see this--It is located on the west wall of the Renaissance Des Moines Savery Hotel at 5th and Locust in downtown Des Moines.

Last month I closed my feature of the month with a 'sneak preview" of a great new mural by Des Moines artist Ben Schuh. Right and left: Here is what it looked like when I published Views of a Farm Boy just one month ago. Below: I promised you it would be continued this month, so--look at the finished product.

Wait----there is more! It is more than just Des Moines--it is Greater Des Moines. Yet it goes beyond that! The Iowa State Capitol, one of my favorite places in the world, may be the focal point of this beautiful work of art. It reminds us that Des Moines is just a small part of a much bigger community--a place we call "Iowa". It is the loving, caring, generous people throughout the state who makes Iowa such a good place to live.

VIEWS OF A FARM BOY

D.E.S.M.O.I.N.E.S.--each letter tells a story. D-The World Food Prize Hall of Laureates reminds me of the huge impact Iowa has had on agriculture throughout the world. E-Lauridsen Park will be the largest skatepark in the nation when completed. I like to watch the young people skate at Walker Johnson Park in Urbandale--I don't think I will try this. S-You might see me walking or riding my bike along the Principal Riverwalk. M-the Robert D.Ray Asian Gardens was named after our popular former Iowa governor, who was so instrumental in relocating refugee families to Iowa. O-The 80/35 Music Festival--this one is not for me, but I do attend other street activities downtown. I-you may find me here-I love to ride my bike over the Green Bridge. N-The T8 greets you at the SW corner of the Papajohn Sculpture Park. You can see how a farm boy would like these giant red i-beams held together by a steel circle in the middle. E-Gray's Lake has a scenic walking trail and is a great swimming segment for Iowa triathlons. S-We already have water trails in central Iowa, but in the future, the Des Moines River in downtown Des Moines may evolve into a major water recreation area.

He has showed you, O man, what is good. And what does the Lord require of you? To act justly and to love mercy and to walk humbly with your God. (NIV) Micah 6:8)
