ONE IN FIVE--YOU AND ME

My view for the month: As many of you know Haiti is my mission passion and I talk a lot about the problem of hunger there. But hunger is not confined to Haiti or the 3rd world countries. There is hunger in America--in Iowa--yes, right here in Urbandale. In fact this signboard on Douglas Avenue is less that one mile from our home--right in the shadow of the Urbandale Food Pantry. With a United States child hunger ratio of 1 in 5, there is obviously a real need and we can help. We in America live in such abundance and the solution is as near as our local grocery store. If each of us  would pick up a few extra cans of food or other nutritious non-perishable items each time we shop and drop them off at church donation centers, other collection sites or deliver them directly to our local food bank or food pantry--the problem would be solved. See how easy it is--let’s work together on this thing and get it done. We just don’t want 1 in 5 kids hungry. Let’s make a new signboard--you and me--it will read--“0 in 5”--because we have defeated hunger in our area.

“If you spend yourselves on behalf of the hungry and satisfy the needs of the oppressed, then your light will rise in the darkness, and your night will become like the noonday.(NIV) (Isaiah 58:10)
